GOP leadership has been working to prevent President Trump from stepping down, but a new development could have serious ramifications for the White House.
On Friday, Politico reported that the House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing to investigate the bathtub scandal and the possible impeachment process for Trump.
The report also noted that the hearing is set to take place on Tuesday.
The committee will reportedly be chaired by Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA), who is the chairman of the House GOP Conference.
The investigation would look into whether the White to the White Tower was improperly accessed.
Politico’s sources said that the panel will also look into possible violations of the Hatch Act, a law that prohibits congressional staffers from working on the House floor without permission.
If the panel finds evidence that White House staffers improperly accessed classified information, it could lead to the impeachment process.
“There’s no question it’s going to be an investigation,” said one Republican House source.
“We’re hoping the committee will look into all aspects of the situation.
We’re going to go to the Capitol, and the president is going to testify.”
Politico’s report comes just one day after the House Ethics Committee announced it would investigate the White, House to the Wall Street Journal.
The ethics panel was set to investigate whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the election, as well as possible conflicts of interest and potential obstruction of justice by Trump.
